step 5: I polished it up with headlight lens restorer, plenty of ammonia much like brasso or other metal polishers. Worked a treat
and a preview of step 6 (ala MS-paint): restoring the lettering, red and black

Looking good. I would maybe just do reverse in red and the rest black. It would be low key and be a small detail that would fit with the r theme.
